Different from nylon‑insert lock nuts, all‑metal locking nuts contain no plastic components. They perform under high‑low temperature and continuous heavy‑vibration, widely adopted in rail‑transit, construction machinery and energy equipment. Many assembly failures stem from wrong selection, improper torque or reversed‑installation instead of product defect. This article lists key technical points for imported all‑metal locking nuts.

1. Locking Principle

Hard‑Lock adopts eccentric wedge structure; Lanfranco relies on slotted deformation for thread engagement. Both realize anti‑loosening via mechanical metal‑thread interference, free from temperature‑aging effect and allow repeated disassembly‑assembly. Note: nuts have defined installation orientation; reversed mounting will completely disable locking function.

2. Selection Checklist

  • Verify thread standard: distinguish metric vs imperial UNC/UNF, do not mix;
  • Temperature range: all‑metal design works from ‑50℃ to +300℃, much better than nylon‑insert nuts;
  • Corrosion condition: confirm base material and surface finish for salt‑spray outdoor environment;
  • Assembly clearance: check nut outer‑diameter and thickness to avoid housing interference.

3. Torque Control & Installation Prohibitions

Follow manufacturer‑recommended torque range. Insufficient torque leads to incomplete wedge/slot engagement and poor locking performance. Excessive torque causes permanent thread plastic deformation and damages locking feature. Clean thread debris and oil before assembly. Install strictly per marking direction; reversed mounting is forbidden. Torque wrench is preferred; impact air‑tool tightening is not recommended.

4. Typical Failure‑Mode Root‑Cause

Loosening under vibration: nut reversed installation; insufficient torque; thread contamination; mismatched nut‑bolt thread size.

Thread galling / cold‑welding: un‑lubricated stainless‑steel thread with high‑speed tightening; lack of thread lubricant under high‑temperature condition.

Damaged nut locking feature: torque far exceeds rated upper limit.

5. BOM Ordering Recommendation

Do not simply write “M12 lock nut”. BOM shall state brand‑model, thread size and surface finish. Mark requirement for original batch certificates for export engineering projects.
