Fastener Export Packaging and Transport Protection Know-How

Fasteners are low-cost, but rust, moisture or crushed cartons at destination cost far more in sorting, replacement and claims. Export packaging must handle heat, humidity, ocean vibration and repeated handling. This article covers practical protection.

Inner Rust and Moisture Protection

Carbon steel fasteners fear salt air and moisture. Usually parts are oiled or wrapped in VCI paper, then sealed in PE bags with desiccant—especially on Southeast Asian and Middle East routes. Stainless won't rust easily but fingerprints can spot in sealed bags; pack cleanly. Small screws use small boxes or reels to prevent plating wear.

Don't mix sizes or materials in one pack—sorting is hard and carbon can contaminate stainless.

Cartons and Pallets

Use 5-ply export cartons taped well; heavy parts go in plywood boxes or on pallets. Keep gross weight to 15-25kg for manual handling, marking center of gravity. Full containers: strap and stretch-wrap pallets to prevent collapse. Mark gross/net weight, carton number and destination marks in moisture-proof ink.

Container Loading

Load heavy cargo low and light cargo high, fill gaps with dunnage bags to prevent shifting. Keep the container dry and watch rainy loading. Photograph loading for damage claims.

Common Arrival Issues

Typical problems: surface rust (insufficient protection), water stains (broken carton/poor seal), plating scratches (unfixed bags), short shipment (label mismatch). Double-check counts and marks before shipping to reduce disputes.

Hong Kong fastener trade services offer packing, loading supervision and consolidation.
