Quality inspection is a critical safeguard in international fastener procurement, ensuring goods meet contractual specifications and preventing downstream assembly failures and claims. Although fasteners are small components, they directly affect structural safety and service life, so global buyers enforce rigorous inspection standards and procedures.

Key Quality Standards

The most widely referenced standards include ISO (ISO 898-1 mechanical properties, ISO 6157 surface imperfections, ISO 10683 coatings), ASTM (A193/A194 high-temperature fasteners, F606 test methods), DIN EN ISO 898-1, JIS (B1180, B1181), and IFI standards. Purchase contracts should specify the standard, property class (carbon steel 8.8/10.9/12.9; stainless A2-70/A4-80), and surface finish.

Core Inspection Items

1. Dimensional and geometric accuracy: Thread gauging (go/no-go, 6g/6H tolerance), nominal diameter, length, head dimensions (width across flats, head height, chamfer), shank diameter, and fillet radius. Critical dimensions require 100% or AQL-sampled inspection. 2. Mechanical properties: Tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, hardness (Rockwell/Vickers), proof load, wedge load, and impact toughness (e.g., Charpy V-notch at -46°C), tested by third-party laboratories on batch samples. 3. Coatings and corrosion resistance: Coating thickness (electro-zinc 8–12 μm; hot-dip galvanizing ≥45 μm), adhesion, salt-spray duration (clear zinc ≥48 h without red rust; Geomet ≥500 h), and hydrogen-embrittlement testing (mandatory 200-hour sustained-load test for grade 10.9 and above). 4. Surface defects: Visual or magnetic-particle inspection for cracks, laps, burrs, rust, and plating blisters, judged against ISO 6157 or ASTM F606. 5. Chemical composition: Spectrometric or wet chemical analysis verifying C, Mn, Si, S, P, Cr, Ni, and Mo against the mill certificate. 6. Marking and packaging: Head markings (grade, manufacturer), lot traceability, packaging (cartons/wooden cases/pallets), and label accuracy (description, size, quantity, standard, production date).

Inspection Workflow

1. Pre-Production Inspection (PPI): Verify raw-material certificates, process documents, tooling, and first-article samples to prevent systemic material or process errors. 2. During Production Inspection (DPI): Conducted at 20–30% completion to check in-line dimensions, appearance, and process stability, enabling early corrective action. 3. Pre-Shipment Inspection (PSI): Performed after 100% production and packaging, before loading, using AQL 0/2.5 (critical 0, major 2.5) to assess dimensions, appearance, function, packaging, and marking. 4. Loading Supervision: After passing PSI, supervise container loading, verify quantities, inspect container condition, and apply seals to prevent substitution or short shipment. 5. Arrival Re-inspection: Upon destination port arrival, buyers may sample goods for third-party laboratory re-testing (SGS, BV, Intertek), especially for high-strength bolts and stainless fasteners. Buyers should specify in contracts the inspection standard, AQL level, inspection agency, non-conformance handling (rework/replacement/deduction), and claim clauses to protect their interests.
